While we’ve already announced this year’s award recipients we’re excited to delve deeper into their inspiring stories. In partnership with the Agriculture Business Council, The Great Frederick Fair, and the Ag Education PR Committee, we proudly recognize Patty Sanville as the 2024 Ag Advocate of the Year.

Originally from Bucks County Pennsylvania, Patty’s introduction to the agricultural world began while spending time on her grandparents’ poultry farm in the Poconos. This early exposure planted the seeds for a passion that would take root 16 years later when she and her husband, David, moved to Maryland with their four children—Ian, Ben, Carissa, and Drew. It was here that Patty discovered her love for the wool industry, driven by her affinity for yarn and the joy of working with sheep.

As her children became involved in 4-H and youth programs, Patty’s connection to agriculture deepened. These experiences not only enriched her understanding but also ignited a passion for agricultural education advocacy within her home community. Patty found herself naturally stepping into leadership roles, allowing her to further cultivate her interest in both agriculture and education.

Patty has served in various leadership capacities on the local level including as the Ag Education Chairman for the Great Frederick Fair and as a superintendent for fiber, fleece, and spinning competitions. Her dedication to promoting agriculture was further exemplified during her presidency of the Frederick County Sheep Breeders Association from 2018 to 2021, where she was honored as Shepherd of the Year in 2016.

Patty’s influence extends far beyond Frederick County. Currently, she serves as the Executive Director for Maryland with the American Sheep Industry and has been appointed by the USDA to the National Sheep Industry Improvement Center Board. Additionally, her work with the Maryland Sheep Breeders Association earned her the title of Maryland’s Shepherd of the Year in 2022. From mentoring local youth programs to holding prominent national leadership roles, Patty has become a powerful voice in agriculture.

Patty’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Lacking the generational knowledge that many farmers inherit, she has had to learn and adapt. Her meticulous planning and proactive approach have been key to overcoming obstacles, leading to the success of her farm and her various roles in the agricultural community.

A strong advocate for the Frederick County Office of Ag, Patty views its establishment as a major milestone for local agriculture. She values the support and resources it offers, recognizing the importance of having a dedicated team to navigate the challenges of the industry. As agriculture evolves, Patty is keenly aware of the balance needed between development and preserving farmland for food and fiber production. In her 16 years in Maryland, she has witnessed the rapid changes in Frederick County’s landscape and the challenges they pose.

Driven by a commitment to the next generation of farmers, Patty encourages aspiring agricultural advocates to embrace their journeys: “Put yourself out there, admit your mistakes, learn from them, and soak up all the knowledge you can through training and experience.”

As we celebrate Patty’s outstanding contributions, we express our gratitude for her tireless efforts and the support of her family. Her inspiring journey reminds us that passion, hard work, and community can shape the future of farming for generations to come.
