In the heart of Frederick County, a bold new chapter in craft spirits is unfolding. True Standard Distilling Co., founded by Brian and Ashley Allen, opened its doors on May 29, 2025, with a singular mission: to celebrate the craft, culture, and joy of rum.
Brian’s journey began far from Maryland—in the sugarcane fields of Hawaii and the beaches of Costa Rica, where he first fell in love with rum and the art of distilling. Years later, after settling in Virginia and working in hospitality, he and Ashley began quietly building toward a dream. With grit, patience, and a shared vision, they brought that dream to life in Frederick.
What sets True Standard apart? Focus. “We’re the House of Cane,” Brian says. “We do one thing—rum—and we do it right.” Every bottle begins with molasses from Baltimore’s Domino Sugar and is distilled, spiced, and aged on-site using all-natural ingredients. Their signature line, Dangerous Summer, includes Silver, Silver Spiced, Spiced, Dark Spiced, and the aged Oxford Reserve—each crafted to suit a range of palates while staying true to their roots.
Since their grand opening, the distillery has been operating full-time, with the tasting room open Wednesday through Sunday and the still running weekdays. Visitors are invited to tour the facility, sip the spirits, and soak in the vibe. “We’ve got bold spirits and bigger plans,” Brian adds. “Follow us on Instagram @TrueStandardDistilling to see what’s next.”
The Frederick community has embraced True Standard with open arms. From heartfelt toasts to surprise proposals, the distillery has quickly become a place where memories are made. “It’s never lost on us that people choose our space to celebrate life’s moments,” Ashley shares. “That’s the kind of connection we dreamed of.”
Behind the bar is a passionate team of 7 full-time and 10 part-time staff who bring heart and hospitality to every shift. As for the future, the Allens envision True Standard as more than a distillery—it’s a destination. Plans include expanding distribution, hosting educational events, and deepening their local roots.
Their advice to aspiring craft beverage entrepreneurs? “Surround yourself with people who believe in the dream as much as you do. Stay true to your vision.”
So next time you’re visiting Frederick, stop by True Standard Distilling and ask for Dangerous Summer rum. Bold spirits. Local roots. That’s the True Standard.
