Two Men on stairsThe 2024 Frederick County Ag Awards Presentation, held at the Great Frederick Fair, honors the remarkable achievements of our agricultural community. While we’ve already announced this year’s award recipients we’re excited to delve deeper into their inspiring stories. In partnership with the Agriculture Business Council, The Great Frederick Fair, and the Ag Education PR Committee, we proudly recognize C. Basil Grossnickle, A Division of Blue Ridge Risk Partners as the 2024 Frederick County Ag Business of the Year. With deep roots in the community and a steadfast commitment to serving the agricultural sector, this recognition is a testament to their unwavering dedication to local farmers and the broader agricultural industry.

C. Basil Grossnickle, a division of Blue Ridge Risk Partners, is an insurance company built on tradition, growth, and dedication, now owned by Danny Harne and Ryan Wiles. Danny’s great-great-grandfather, Charles C. Grossnickle, played a pivotal role in the development of the family business as a founder, director and agent of the Brethren Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Hagerstown. The legacy was furthered by his grandson, who established C. Basil Grossnickle, Inc. in 1969. Danny joined the agency in 1980 where he not only learned the business and technical aspects of insurance under the guidance of his grandfather, but also the importance of treating clients with respect and integrity.

In 2002, the agency welcomed Ryan Wiles, and together they brought a combined 66 years of experience to their clients. Their mutual respect for the agricultural community has always driven their commitment to providing the best possible service.

In 2020, a significant transformation occurred with the formation of Blue Ridge Risk Partners, born from the acquisition and merger of three well-established agencies, including C. Basil Grossnickle, Inc. This merger expanded their reach across Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, with licensure in all 50 states and access to over 150 insurance carriers. Despite this impressive growth, C. Basil Grossnickle has remained true to its roots, continuing to deliver personalized, attentive service to its Frederick County clients.

For 55 years, Blue Ridge Risk Partners, formerly C. Basil Grossnickle, has been a trusted name in Frederick County, particularly within the agricultural community. With over 950 agriculture clients across multiple states, including 375 in Frederick County alone, they have become a cornerstone of support for local farmers. Their deep understanding of the unique needs of the agricultural sector, combined with their extensive experience, allows them to offer comprehensive insurance solutions that truly meet the needs of their clients.

Danny explained how Frederick County’s agricultural landscape has transformed significantly over the past 40 years, prompting insurance to adapt as well. The team at Blue Ridge Risk Partners has witnessed major shifts in farming practices, especially within the dairy industry. Navigating these changes has required close collaboration with insurance carriers to develop products tailored to the rapid and ever-changing needs of the agricultural community. Despite the challenges posed by rigid policies and coverage limitations, Blue Ridge Risk Partners’ extensive industry experience and commitment to their clients have enabled them to overcome obstacles and continue providing top-tier service.

For those looking to start an agricultural business, the advice from Blue Ridge Risk Partners is clear: “First off, make sure Blue Ridge Risk Partners is on your risk management team—we’ve got your back!” Beyond that, they emphasize the importance of creativity, vision, and solid planning. “Many successful businesses started with a simple idea, and with the right support and a clear plan, the possibilities are endless.”

As we celebrate this well-deserved recognition, we extend our congratulations to Danny, Ryan and the entire team at Blue Ridge Risk Partners for their continued excellence and dedication to Frederick County’s agricultural community. Here’s to many more years of success and service!
