As the final spotlight in our series on this year’s award recipients, we’re thrilled to share the inspiring story of Emma Jagoz, owner of Moon Valley Farm and the 2024 Frederick County Young Farmer of the Year!

In collaboration with the Agriculture Business Council, The Great Frederick Fair, and the Ag Education PR Committee, we proudly recognize Emma for her remarkable leadership, innovation, and dedication to enhancing the local food system from her farm in Woodsboro.

Emma’s farming journey began in 2012 on borrowed land in Baltimore County. As a first-generation farmer with no agricultural background, she was driven by a desire to grow healthy, nutritious food for her children and community. With determination and a vision, she launched a modest 12-member Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, planting the seeds for what would become an extraordinary farming enterprise.

In 2019, Emma purchased 25 acres in Frederick County, where Moon Valley Farm flourished. Today, the operation spans 70 thriving acres, employs 25 staff members, and serves nearly 1,000 CSA members. Moon Valley Farm’s year-round organic produce operation delivers a wide array of standard and specialty vegetables and herbs, supplying over 100 acclaimed restaurants in the DMV area—including Michelin-starred establishments.

In spring 2024, Emma introduced a family-friendly pick-your-own strawberry festival, adding an agritourism element to the farm’s offerings. She also collaborates with programs like Farm 2 School Frederick to bring fresh, local produce to schools and families in need.

Emma’s commitment to innovation has transformed Moon Valley Farm into a model of efficiency and education. By incorporating advanced farming techniques and partnering with other farms, the CSA program offers a diverse range of products for both families and chefs. Additionally, Emma provides educational resources to her customers, including tips, storage guidance, and recipes to highlight seasonal produce.

Emma’s efforts have been bolstered by grants like the Frederick County Agricultural Innovation Grant, which supported the installation of an irrigation system, the purchase of essential equipment like a salad spinner, and upgrades needed for Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification.

Like any entrepreneur, Emma has faced challenges, particularly in managing her farm’s rapid growth. However, she attributes her success to the incredible team at Moon Valley Farm and remains focused on expanding the farm’s impact. Future plans include an on-site processing facility for value-added products, further diversifying offerings and supporting the local food system.

Beyond the farm, Emma is a passionate mentor and advocate. She supports aspiring farmers through her involvement with the Farmpreneurship Advisory Board and Future Harvest Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, where she has served as a mentor and keynote speaker. Locally, Emma contributes to Frederick County’s agricultural future as a member of various advisory boards and committees, including the Frederick County Ag Business Council.

Emma advocates for sustainable agriculture and land stewardship, recognizing its critical role in improving waterway health and protecting the Chesapeake Bay. Her leadership on committees like the Maryland Department of Agriculture’s Soil Health Committee and the Million Acre Challenge Board underscores her dedication to responsible farming practices.

Emma’s achievements have earned widespread recognition, including being named the 2024 Farmer of the Food Shed by Future Harvest and one of Frederick County’s Top 50 Professionals Under 40. She was also featured as one of Leader Magazine’s Women in Agriculture. Her story exemplifies the spirit of innovation, resilience, and community that defines Frederick County’s agricultural landscape.

As we conclude our celebration of the 2024 Ag Award winners, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to Emma Jagoz. Her passion and leadership inspire the next generation of farmers, and her work ensures a brighter future for agriculture in Frederick County and beyond.
