Milkhouse Brewery has long been a trailblazer in Frederick County’s craft beer scene, championing farm-to-glass brewing and showcasing the best of Maryland agriculture. Now, the beloved brewery is turning the page to an exciting new chapter, welcoming a leadership team deeply connected to its roots and ready to build on its legacy.
Meet the New Leadership
For Ray Simmons, Klu LaBelle, and Harry Harne (pictured L to R), stepping into ownership is both an honor and a natural progression. “Having brewed here for a decade, I’ve seen our community and identity grow,” Harry shared. “The enthusiasm for truly local beer isn’t just from our neighbors—brewers from around the world visit to see how we showcase Maryland malts and hops.”
Milkhouse has always taken pride in using locally grown ingredients, including unique crops like chestnuts. That tradition will remain central, but expect some creative twists. “We look forward to getting a bit more experimental at times,” the team said, hinting at exciting brews ahead.
The sense of community that defines Milkhouse will continue to thrive. “Every new band that plays, artist who hangs their work, and beer release brings new faces—and we look forward to welcoming them into the Milkhouse family,” they shared. As the team looks ahead, they’re excited for what’s brewing—literally. From fresh music on the farm to planning beers like Green Farmer Pale Ale #30, Milkhouse will remain a place for connection and celebration while showcasing the best of Maryland-grown malts. It’s a true testament to their commitment to local agriculture and craft excellence.
Honoring the Legacy
For founders, Tom Barse and Carolann McConaughy, the greatest achievement has been the sense of connection Milkhouse has fostered. “We are probably most proud of the community we have created through the brewery,” they shared. Many friendships and connections have been formed that might never have happened without Milkhouse. Beyond those friendships, the brewery has served as a model for other farm breweries and contributed to alternative agriculture, value-added farming, and agritourism in Frederick County.
As they step back from day-to-day operations, Tom and Carolann are confident in the team taking the Milkhouse Brewery on its next journey while cherishing the community they created. “Harry has been with us for 10 years, and Ray is approaching five years at Milkhouse. Together they create excellent beers made with farm-grown and locally sourced ingredients. Klu, Harry’s wife, brings great new ideas for the future.” This transition allows Tom and Carolann to focus on farming projects, food production, and agritourism—while knowing Milkhouse is in capable hands.
